Project Rubric
CriteriaI. Project Details/
Advanced
Proficient
Basic1. Three or more text components missing:- Appropriate titles, slogans, etc… (pre- approved) - No misspellings
II. Final Banner Design Details
Banner design accurately imposed on 1” grid graphing paper with x- and y-axis clearly identified. Each design should be the combination of at least 45 lines. No more than 2/3rds should be horizontal or vertical lines. Linear equations should be written directly behind the lines on the back of the banner paper. Smaller scale finished banner model is included (8 pts max)
Banner design sloppily drafted on the 1” grid graphing paper. The x-axis and y-axis not clearly identified, and little to no labeling of linear equations on the back of the banner paper.
Two or more of the following insufficiently met components:
III. Proposal
Each member has written two or more paragraphs explaining how they found the linear equations that map out the design and how it relates to solving systems of linear equations. Thorough cost-analysis completed as a group that includes:
1.One of the following paragraphs missing or incomplete:
Three or more of any of the following components missing or incomplete:
IV. Banner Presentation (4 pts. Max)
All members spoke equally and all could be heard and understood. The presenters clearly show the connection between solving systems of linear equations and creating the banner design. Presenters explain why they chose to make their banner for their particular organization and what costs are associated with printing the banner. (max 4 pts.)
All members spoke equally; one or more members could not be heard/understood. The project is described, but the connections between the math and the design components are not made explicit. Presenters explain why they chose to make their banner for their particular organization, but did not discuss associated costs (or vice versa). (Max 3 pts.)
One or more member(s) of group did not speak an equal amount of time. Unclear from presentation what the project is about or what math students learned. Presenters do not explain why they chose to make their banner for their particular organization nor were associated costs addressed. (Max 2 pts)

Parent-Teacher Letter
Dear Parents,
I am writing on behalf of our 8th grade Advanced Math class at ______________________ to tell you about an exciting project based instructional unit _______________ will be participating in. The project will be integrated into our schedule and will span over the course of 3 weeks.
The purpose of the project is to challenge students to create a banner for their favorite organization, but they must do so by designing it through the use of systems of linear equations. Over the course of the 3 week unit, students will gain an in-depth understanding of linear equations, how to manipulate and solve systems, and apply them to a real world situation. They will explore all three methods; elimination, substitution, and graphing, and be required to show a thorough understanding of each. The skills that the students develop while learning to solve systems of linear equations will be applied directly when they are designing and constructing their banners. The students will also be able to add in their own creativity throughout the project.
At the conclusion of the Points of Interest project, students will present their banners as a group to their peers as well as administrators from the school and a few local graphic designers. This presentation will take place on the Thursday of the third week of the project and will be in the school auditorium. We encourage you to attend. A vote will be taken by those who attend and the winning banner will be made by the local Target Copy and displayed in the school office.
The project will require more funding than the school can provide but this will be supplied by a very generous grant that is funding the entire project. This grant will be used to purchase all materials used throughout the project as well as the buses that will be required for the field trip to the local Target Copy Center. You will be provided with more information concerning the field trip within the next week. If you would like more information or to see an entire overview of the project and everything it will assess, please visit our website:

If you have any additional questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at the school at: 352-867-5309 and I would be happy to answer your questions. The best times to reach me by phone are 2:30-3:30pm. Or you may email me at: [email protected].
